Regardless if they are playing on wooden floors or on mud, shooting the ball under bright lights or on makeshift courts, Jr. WNBA All-Star Heart Pagara Donor and Jr. WNBA Coach of the Year Sunshine Echavez have made basketball their source of pride and happiness.
Through the Jr. WNBA, these women embarked on a trip of a lifetime when they went to China for the ultimate NBA experience. While there, they participated in an intercultural exchange with their counterparts from four other countries. In addition to making new friends and discovering the sights and sounds of Dongguan, they were able to watch the first-ever NBA Global Game, where the guest of honor is none other than His Airness Michael Jordan.
Enriching the experience was the opportunity to learn from and train under the guidance of the program’s roster of professional coaches, including Coach Echavez. From watching Coach Echavez in action, Donor was inspired to consider coaching as a future career.
“Gusto ko pong maging coach,” said Donor. “Gusto ko pong makatulong sa ibang bata. Yung mga natutunan ko po, gusto kong ituro sa kanila.”
Regardless of how these ladies’ journies began, the Jr. WNBA was able to lead them on the path to realizing a dream bigger than their own – one where they could help others achieve theirs.
