Following wins against GlobalPort and Meralco, the Alaska Aces beat Barangay Ginebra San Miguel 101-86 yesterday evening, bringing their winning streak to three. On the road to the 2017 Philippine Cup, the Aces are resolved in winning the conference as part of their #DriveFor15.
The Ginebra squad, which won the preceding Commissioner’s Cup, was unable to resist the Aces, who led for most of the game. RJ Jazul was the top performer, with the characteristically calm player racking up 16 points. The Beast Calvin Abueva was likewise on the hunt, contributing 12 points.
Alaska Head Coach Alex Compton told media, “I’m actually a little surprised with the result. I was prepared to be stressed out for two hours…but our defensive activity, especially in the half court, was good. We did a good job in scrambling and taking away their shots.”
Compton wasn’t exaggerating: despite Ginebra rookie Kevin Ferrer scoring a career-high 19 points that included five three-pointers, the Gin Kings were unable to overcome the Aces, who surged ahead in the third quarter for a game-high 29-point lead.
With 3 wins and 2 losses, the Aces are now tied at third place with Rain or Shine, Star, TNT, and Blackwater Elite, while San Miguel Beermen and GlobalPort Batang Pier currently sit atop the rankings.
