Monday, October 9, marked the end of a journey like no other for this year’s Jr. NBA and the Jr. WNBA All-Stars. As they flew back to Manila from Shanghai, they brought home with them some new memories, new experiences, and most importantly, new learnings in the sport that they all share the same passion and talent for.
The trip to Shanghai was a jam-packed experience for the talented young athletes, with something new and exciting happening everyday.
Accompanied by their Coaches of the Year Catrina Bioncog and Jed Cabellon, the All-Star team was able to hone and improve their skills through a series of training sessions conducted with their counterparts from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. This step up in their training regimen was in the form of 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 friendly games, that of which the Philippine Jr. All-Stars team shining in the former. More than the friendly competition, it proved to the young athletes that the game of basketball knew no language barrier, and that it is through the game itself that players communicate.
The All-Star team also had the privilege to meet NBA Legend “Junk Yard Dog” Jerome Williams, who gave them a short talk about why training and conditioning is crucial to becoming a great basketball player, and its importance in the NBA.
Aside from all things basketball, the team also had the some time for leisure, as they had the chance to tour around Shanghai to take in some of its culture. They were able to visit some sights, as well as trying out some local cuisine—something the young athletes had actually been looking forward to do.
Of course, an NBA experience trip wouldn’t be complete without an actual NBA game featuring their favorite idols to cap it all off. The All-Stars got the opportunity to watch the defending champions of the NBA, the Golden State Warriors, go against the Minnesota Timberwolves as they went head-to-head on an exciting pre-season match.
With this, another year of Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA has come to a conclusion. As the 2017 All-Stars end their journey, only time will tell what’s next as they move forward in their bright futures as talented young athletes. And as they continue, another set of aspiring young players are no doubt getting ready to follow suit.
