For the coming season of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL), a new Philippine Team will soon rise. Joining the ranks of Southeast Asia’s only professional regional basketball league in South East Asia on the heels of similar announcements by Taiwan and Hong Kong, the Pilipinas Basketball Club Inc. (PBCI) has confirmed its participation in the coming season – making it the fourth team from the Philippines to take part in the ABL since its creation.
According to Virtual Playground’s (which owns the PBCI) Charlie Dy, “We at Virtual Playground and PBCI see the growing potential of the ABL…We just want the Philippines to be represented well that’s why we’re making this effort.”
While the official team name and lineup are still being finalized, it will hopefully follow in the footsteps of its predecessors, the Philippine Patriots, who reigned in the 2010 season and the San Miguel Beermen, who won the title in 2013. The PBCI is planning to stage their home games in Laguna, Cebu and Davao; and they’re looking forward in holding free basketball clinics nationwide.
With basketball being, by far, the nation’s most watched and played sport, the upcoming ABL will be yet another chance for us to show the world the passion and the heart of the Filipino on the hardcourt.
